This full moon, photographed last night, is November’s Beaver Moon—the North American seasonal name; beavers shore up their dams and lodges and stock supplies before winter, hence the name. Astronomically, the Sun and Moon are about 180° apart; so the Moon rises near sunset and sets at dawn. In our calendar the same moon is Raas/Kartik Purnima—observed in remembrance of Shri Krishna’s Raas Leela; around this time, rituals like the Kartik Snan at Kuakata and the Rash Mela on Dublar Char in the Sundarbans take place. One moon, many names—nature’s preparation and a festival of devotion—both gathered in the soft light of this image. (Because of time-zone differences, the calendar date may vary slightly, but the astronomical event is the same.)
