Jibanananda wrote — “বাংলার মুখ আমি দেখিয়াছি” — I have seen the face of Bengal. But he was not speaking of maps. He spoke of the heron, the dew, the evening, the river — of Ruposhi Bangla, Bengal in her beauty. That river may have been the Dhaleswari, or perhaps another.
When the sun sets on the banks of the Dhaleswari, I see Ruposhi Bangla. I see her once, and I see her again and again. I see Bengal’s face.
Some rivers show you scenery. This river shows you so much more.
